Cloudy Day Photography

This softer light is ideal for portraits weddings wildlife and even macro photography.

Cloudy day photography. When shooting on a cloudy day you will need to boost your ISO to compensate for 2-3 stops of light reduction from the clouds. Cloudy day photography settings are a little different than what you would use on a clear or overcast day. This can be a pain if you need to stick to a strict timescale.

When shooting portraits on an overcast day the sky can act like a giant soft box creating soft even light. Since the light intensity is generally lower on an overcast day this lets us employ wider or faster lens apertures or f-stops. On cloudy days you might want to adjust your camera settings ISO up to 400 or 800 widen your aperture and slightly reduce your shutter speed.

The same rule holds for any wildlife. If you photograph a bird in bright afternoon sunlight harsh shadows hide some of the details that make your fine-feathered friend photogenic. Every time your light changes you need to change your settings.

Taking pictures at noon on a cloudy day is another story. Michigan based photography. The sun is an amazing light source and the clouds complement it by taking of the hard edges of midday sun.

If nothing else cloudy days give photographers the all-time biggest natural soft box for diffused light.
